Orthopedic Technician

The Orthopedic Technician is responsible and specially trained to assist the Orthopedic Surgeon(s) in the treatment of the Orthopedic Patient. Expert in the application of plaster and synthetic casting and splinting. Responsible for instructing the patient of proper care of the cast and splints.

Summary of Accountabilities:

  1. Assists Surgeon(s) with casting, splinting, cast removal, traction, simple braces, fittings and prosthetics.
  2. Assists with suture removal
  3. Escorts patients to and from exam room
  4. Responsible for exam room preparation and cleaning
  5. Obtain medication authorizations for injectables
  6. Working knowledge of aseptic techniques and is able to prepare for surgical procedures and assemble fracture tables
  7. Perform procedures related to debridement wounds including diabetic ulcers
  8. Triage phone messages, written and oral in a timely manner
  9. Offers highest quality clinical services and customer service at all times to patients and their families.
  10. Communicate concerns/patient issues with surgeons
  11. Educate patients on use of various orthopedic appliances, such as walkers, braces and prosthetic limbs
  12. Assist with any additional duties as needed or as directed by the Practice Manager and/or Regional Administrator and Surgeons
  13. Travel to other sites as needed

Minimum Certifications, Registry and/or Licenses Required:
National Association of Orthopedic Technologists Certification OR Orthopedic Technologist Cert OR Registered Orthopedic Technologist, ROT required

Minimum Degree Required and Experience Required:
High school diploma or GED equivalent required; Minimum five years’ experience as an Orthopedic Technician required.

Skill Requirements:

Familiarity with HIPAA and patient confidentiality regulations. Ability to multi-task and prioritize required. Strong organizational skills and outstanding customer service skills required. Strong command of the English language both in written and verbal communications.
